The Boston Pops 4th of July 2023 Fireworks Spectacular’s history
One of the most popular Fourth of July celebrations in the United States is in Boston. Orchestra Around the Fourth, which features a concert by the Boston Pops and fireworks.
Before Arthur Fiedler started the Boston Pops conductorship nearly 90 years ago, he had a thought that would fundamentally alter the connection between the orchestra and the City of Boston.
He believed that great symphonic music should be freely and easily accessible to the general public. It is similar to the free availability of celebrated literature in public libraries and the purchase of amazing art in museums.
Fiedler, who was at the time a conductor of his ensemble and a violist in the Boston Symphony, started to raise money to realize his vision. The first free Esplanade Concert was held at the specially built acoustic shell along the Charles River’s banks two years later, on July 4, 1929.

If you’re one of the folks keeping us in the race, paddle over to Boston, one of the fittest cities in the nation. Boston has a fantastic idea for combining exercise and a lovely Fourth of July view from the lake.
You can rent one of their boats at the Soldier’s Field Road store in Allston/Brighton and paddle four miles to the fireworks, or for a simpler experience, go to the Kendall Square facility in Cambridge, which is only five minutes away from the fireworks. There are single or double kayaks as well as five-person canoes as options.
4-Castle Island Park & Fort Independence
Find your way to Castle Island if you’re in Southie or the South End. Grab a bite at Sullivan’s, and if the sky is clear, you’ll be able to witness fireworks displays from Quincy and other local locations in addition to the Boston Pops Fireworks in the distance.
